Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band

Led by pianist/saxophonist/arranger Gordon Goodwin, The Big Phat Band comes to the Scherr Forum, Saturday April 27, 2024, at 7:30 pm.

Having amassed 21 Grammy nominations, four Grammy wins, and three Emmy wins, Goodwin is the most decorated big band leader in the 21st century. Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band is an internationally known ensemble with a reputation as one of the most exciting large ensembles in jazz.

The Big Phat Band has released eight critically acclaimed records, including Life in the Bubble, which garnered four Grammy Nominations, and won the Grammy for Best Large Ensemble Album. Their most recent release is a five song EP called The Reset, which is rapidly securing its status as both a critical and popular hit.

Combining the big-band swing of the 1930s and ‘40s with contemporary music such as funk and jazz fusion, the Big Phat Band, is a national phenomenon, a “winning combination of impeccable musicianship and pop savvy” JazzTimes. Comprised of L.A.’s finest instrumental players, the music of this 18-piece jazz orchestra bubbles over with melodic ingenuity and infectious rhythms and makes for a vibrant and energetic live experience.

Goodwin is also a successful composer and arranger in Hollywood. He won a 2006 Grammy for his instrumental arrangement of “Incredits” from the Pixar Animation Studios film “The Incredibles.” He has written and worked with artists like Ray Charles, Christina Aguilera, Johnny Mathis, John Williams, Natalie Cole, David Foster, Sarah Vaughan, Mel Tormé, Leslie Odom Jr., Idina Menzel, and Quincy Jones, to name a few. His charts are played all over the world, and along with his method books and CDs, have been a robust source of inspiration and learning for thousands of young musicians.
